Course Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the attendee will have learned how to differentiate TMD from other conditions. The course attendee will learn how to evaluate and utilize evidence-based treatments for TMD.

Detailed Course Description:

• Differential diagnosis of TMD
• Other orofacial pain conditions and headache disorders mimicking TMD
• Common misdiagnosis and how to prevent them
• Review of treatment modalities including oral appliances, botulinum toxin injections, trigger point injections, joint injections, medications and TMJ surgeries
• When to treat, and when to refer the patient with TMD to an orofacial pain specialists or other provider
• The connection between sleep disorders and TMD

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Nojan Bakhtiari is a residency-trained and board-certified TMJ and Orofacial Pain specialist in New York City. He is a leading expert in the field and maintains a full-time private practice limited to the evidence-based care of TMD, orofacial pain, sleep apnea and related headaches.

He is Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. He previously directed the Orofacial Pain service at Yale-New Haven and was a professor at the University of Connecticut. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. He has authored a book chapter on Orofacial Pain and TMD. He is President-Elect of the NYU Dentistry Alumni Association and serves on the council of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He speaks nationally at various universities, hospitals, dental societies, and conferences.
