GAO Issues Report on Private Health Insurance Market Concentration
The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) has issued a report on market concentration in private health insurance. GAO found that private health insurance market concentration generally increased from 2011 through 2022, with three or fewer insurers holding at least 80% of the market share for the individual and employer group markets in at least 35 states. However, New York is a state in which the largest three issuers have consistently held less than 80% market share in every year studied in every health insurance category.
